Freeing beauty

This evening I was watching a program that explored  Michelangelo and his unfinished sculptures.

The thing about the half-formed figures is that it looked like fully formed models emerging from stone. As if they were trapped in the rock and the artist was simply setting them free. Revealing their true form.

It got me thinking.

If every block of rock or marble has a masterpiece hidden inside, just waiting for the right artist to set them free.

The artist who stands before a blank slab would have to have the great hubris of believing that they were the chosen one. That they were seeing the soul of the rock, and that their vision was the best use of that slab.
