When things were sweeter
All of us seemed to have lost something along the way.
When we were young I remember the thrill of going out to a movie. The thrill of having some new toy, or an invite to a function. So many things, simple things gave incredible joy and angst and it was terrible and beautiful.
These days, we have everything a person could want, and then some, but nothing really rocks our world. So we get a new car, go on a trip.
It's all the same. Nice. Nice. Just nice.
When did we lose the ability to be moved by the simple pleasures.?
And why?
I envy kids and the pleasure they take from the promise of toys or sweets. Little things, are so amazing to them.
A wise man once said, sit in the company of children as they live in the moment. They are present.
As we grow up we learn to plan and delay fulfillment, and be sensible, and prepare for the future catastrophic events and worry about danger, present and future. Some Real and most imagined.
Children however are free, truly free from this. We would argue that they are free as they don't have the responsibilities of adulthood, and that, is true but the fact is that they have the gift of living in the moment.
I once told a friend that, when I was in the shop all those years ago poor people who could not make ends meet would act in a strange way.
They would be and borrow, just to make it to pay day. As soon as they had collected their salaries, they would begin a spending spree.
Drink, waste, music and women.
And before the end of the day, many would be broke again.
I meant to illustrate with this story how irresponsibly these poor people were when it came to money.
My friend pointed out something I had not seen.
He said that these poor people got to be king for a day.
One day every month they would live the dream. And spend the rest of the month looking forward to that one amazing day.
When last were you the king.?
I was without answer.
M Parak.
