Too clever for my own good
We were sitting around the table at the office and having a fast-food lunch on Fridays as we usually do.
Just shooting the breeze with my Co-workers and the topic of "babel" came up.
I went on to show off my amazing insight on how the computer algorithms that translate text all have "Rosetta" in the catchy names because of the Rosetta stone and when it came to the translation of the spoken word they inevitably had "Babel" in the name.
To mumble in an unintelligible way was also to babel.
The origin of the term was, I said, from the Hitchhiker's guide to the universe, in which each alien had a fish implanted into their ears. The "Babel fish" did a real-time translation of all speech to thought and was the basis for a universe-wide civilization.
I thought it was rather clever to have put it all together, and caught two of my co-workers rolling their eyes at each other.
This got me thinking.
So that night I dug a little deeper and more I found this...
